Power Inverter for Car Use

Running simple electronics inside your vehicle seems like something that would be easy to do. It can be easy, but electronically speaking, it isn’t very simple. To accomplish this feat, you actually need to buy a power inverter to plug your devices into. The electrical system of a car runs as a direct current power source. This is because the initial power burst is provided by the car’s battery. Since household electronics run on AC power (because that is what is in buildings), they can’t directly be run in the vehicle. Using a power inverter as the middle man between these contrasting power styles allows them to get along with each other.

If you are looking to use your household devices within your car, you probably want to find an inverter that plugs into a 12V outlet or cigarette lighter. This will allow really easy setup for your inverter and electronics. Just plug the inverter into the outlet and your device into the outlet of the inverter. As long as the car’s electrical system is engaged, you will be able to power your devices.

Note: A key thing to be aware of is that if your electrical system is engaged but the motor is off then you can drain your battery. To make sure that this isn’t a problem, you just need to occasionally turn on the vehicle so it can recharge the battery or keep the engine on while you need power.

These 12v outlet inverters come in a variety of flavors, with the primary differentiation coming in the form of a watt output rating. A basic car power inverter will only be able to supply 50 watts of power to your electronics. This is fine for really small things, but if you can afford an inverter with a higher rating, it will give you more flexibility.

Getting your hands on one of these doesn’t have to empty your wallet. A cheap power inverter for car use should cost less than fifty dollars, although you can find expensive models that cost several hundred dollars. If you have more intense power needs, you may have to look into inverters that connect directly to your car’s battery. There are a lot more choices of these that run outside the scope of this article, but they have the same basic functionality and power ratings.
